Lync 2013 Client stops working when sending or receiving an IM

When attempting to send or receive an IM in Lync 2013 Client the application crashes and shows the stopped working message. The other elements of the application appear to work fine, like the sending and receiving of video calls and the sharing of desktops.

A few messages are dropped into the event log - this is the one for the error:
