Which Lync to Use

I'm using Office 365 with an E1 license. As part of that account/license, I'm able to use Lync for Android and have had any issues. Lync for desktop is another story... I'm able to install the 32-bit version of Lync 2013, but get a error upon startup: Microsoft Lync has Stopped Working. (It appears that I'm logged in, though.) I've uninstalled/reinstalled/fixed, but no luck.

Here are some additional details:

  • Hardware: Lenovo T420 64-bit laptop.
  • OS: Windows 7
  • MS Office: Office 2010 + MS Project 2003 + MS Visio 2003

I'm wondering if I'm using the correct version of Lync. Also, is Lync Basic free? (The download site lists Lync Basic 2013 as a trial when listed among other versions, but it doesn't say "trial" in the download page specific to the product:

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/lync/dn146015.aspx

I'm unable to install the 64-bit version because of the 32-bit versions of Office I'm using. (I get an install error.) I also got errors when trying to install the 2010 versions of Lync.

Which Lync should I be installing? (Note: I don't need the advanced telephony features.)
