Lync Online 2013 and our ADFS Servers

We have a local ADFS environment that is used for students email accounts hooked to Live@edu.  Our Active Directory domain is set to one UPN but all the existing and future user accounts in our Users OU are set to a different UPN.  When a user tries to setup Lync 2013 and places their email address in our ADFS servers are interrupting the login and the Lync client will display a error stating that The server is temporarily unavailable.  When looking on our ADFS servers we can see the user show up over there which it shouldn't as the Office 365/Lync account is separate and not federated.

If we run the Lync.exe as a different user even one that matches our AD domain it works, if we log into the machine as the fully qualified username using the main AD UPN it works.

Basically I am trying to find a way to make the Lync Client's connect to Microsoft without having our ADFS servers get in the way or do any local user workarounds.  If anyone has any tips that would be helpful.

We are running a ADFS 2.0 Update 2 Server Farm that is load balanced if that helps any.
