Lync Client - Reverse Number Lookup

Can someone please explain the exact mechanism that a Lync client uses for Reverse Number Lookup.

For example, when a call comes in from the PSTN or a PBX: what is the process for resolving the incoming number into a name that is displayed to the called Lync user. Probably the first source for the reverse number lookup is the Lync addressbook. After that, which contact name takes precedence, the one in Outlook contacts or the one in AD? What does actual happen during the RNL process? What about number formats? Do they always have to be in e.164 format or does Lync try to do some sort of mapping of the incoming number to different number formats?
Is there any document or Link that describes this in detail?

Many Thanks and best regards,
Hanno98
