DHCP scope options to support failover for IP phones in multi-pool environment

Hi there,

I've setup a Lync test environment and am trialling a number of Lync certified handsets: Polycom CX500/600, HP 4110/4120s etc. I've setup the DHCP scope options (NTP, 43, 120 etc) as per the MS recommendations, and the devices are working fine.  I can sign onto any pool in the environment and everything works.

However, when testing a site outage scenario - complete failure of the Lync infratructure at the first site, including the SIP and web server that's referenced in the aforementioned DHCP scope options - that's when it all falls apart. None of the IP phones appear to be rehomed to their secondary voice registrar, another Front-End pool at an alternate site, and they refuse to sign on. This isn't really suprising because in setting those DHCP scope options, we've effectively told the devices to only ever contact the Lync services at the primary site (making no mention of the secondary FE pool).

Is there a way to get the Lync IP phones to automatically connect to their secondary voice registratar in a primary site outage scenario.... via DHCP/DNS SRV records or some other mechanism? Am I missing something obvious?

Regards, James
